Do I need a GP referral to see a psychologist for a workers comp claim?

In most cases, yes. For a Workers Compensation claim this is a specific workers comp referral from your nominated treating doctor, not a Medicare Mental Health Treatment Plan, and it links your psychological treatment to your work injury. You don’t need your insurer’s approval before booking a first appointment, and if you don’t have a referral yet, we can talk you through exactly what to ask your GP

For patients with an eligible claim, there’s no cost to you. Sessions are billed directly to your insurer at the rates set by the scheme, so you don’t pay upfront. If your care ever needs to extend beyond what’s currently approved, we’ll always talk it through with you first.

We work with the psychological impacts of workplace injuries and motor vehicle accidents. That includes primary psychological injuries, such as trauma, bullying or harassment at work, and secondary conditions like anxiety, depression or PTSD that develop after a physical injury. We also help with adjustment difficulties, sleep problems and the loss of confidence around returning to work or driving, and provide tinnitus counselling for noise-related injuries.

Yes, in some cases, once your claim has been lodged. Many Workers Compensation and CTP schemes let reasonably necessary treatment begin while your claim is still being assessed, so you don’t always have to wait for a final decision. The process and early-treatment limits vary from scheme to scheme, so contact us with your claim details and we’ll help you understand what applies to you.

Yes. If you have a preferred psychologist or counsellor at Mind Solution Group, you or your GP can name them on the referral and we’ll do our best to accommodate it. If you begin with one of our clinicians and later feel someone else would suit you better, that’s completely fine too, we’ll help you make the change.

There’s no fixed number of sessions. Treatment under a Workers Compensation or CTP claim continues for as long as it stays reasonable and necessary and is approved by your insurer. Your psychologist reviews your progress regularly and requests further sessions when they’re needed, so your care is guided by your recovery rather than a set limit.

Yes. Workers Compensation and CTP schemes generally cover Telehealth psychology sessions on the same basis as in-person ones, so attending by video doesn’t change what you’re entitled to or what’s covered. It’s a practical option if you live regionally, have limited mobility after your injury, or simply prefer the ease of being at home.

Yes. Alongside treatment, we prepare the reports the schemes rely on, including treatment requests, progress and review reports, and psychological functional assessments, all written clearly and in line with scheme requirements. We know these often drive time-sensitive claims decisions, so we focus on prompt turnaround and straightforward communication. Insurers and case managers can request an assessment directly through our team.

Yes, and it’s straightforward. GPs and nominated treating doctors can refer through our referral form, noting the claim type and the psychological symptoms related to the injury. We handle the scheme paperwork from there and send regular progress updates, so the referring doctor stays in the loop of their patient’s care. If you’re unsure which service fits, our team is happy to talk it through before you refer.

Yes. Every clinician is registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) or is a qualified counsellor, which means they meet nationally regulated standards for training, ethics and ongoing professional development. Just as importantly, they work day to day within the Workers Compensation and CTP schemes, so they understand the claim requirements as well as the clinical side. That combination keeps your treatment both effective and properly supported under your claim.

Yes. Our psychology, EMDR therapy, functional assessment and counselling services are available in every state and territory, delivered in person or by Telehealth depending on your location and needs. Because Telehealth connects you with the same clinicians wherever you are, living outside a major city doesn’t limit the quality or continuity of your care.
